A new year to look forward to! Happy holidays:)
Hi friends, I hope your holiday season is relaxing after your fam jams are over. :) I got to hang with most of my family this year as we were all in town at various times over the last little while. As much as I am the weirdo with an alternate life within my normal family unit, I love that all my siblings are comically inclined. This is what bonds us and I appreciate that very much! So what is next on the agenda? Been deep-diving into tech investing and learning a ton about the sector which is killing in my portfolio! 2024 I ramped up my investing study and it has paid off. Thankful to all my friends I can talk investing with. The more you know from different sources the better!
On the creative front...I have a shoot with Will Santillo again in the new year which will no doubt be sultry. He does have a great eye. Expect those shots only on my website and X because of course, Insta is censorship city. :s I am also putting together a show/retrospective of my theatre troupe: The Scandelles. The event is scheduled for April, and my theatre partner and I need to make several decisions about how we want the evening to unfold. We started making theatre together 25 years ago. So there is a lot of content to sift through. I rewatched some of the art porn we made for one of the shows I directed: "Who's Your Dada". Hilarious. God, we had fun making theatre in a DIY world. If we had access to the technology we have now, I can only imagine where we would have ended up as a theatre troupe. I was happy to be creating art for little pay in my 20s and 30s, but priorities have changed—for both the arts community in Toronto and myself. I’m grateful to have collaborated with amazing individuals who have become lifelong friends. However, when I see what is considered cutting-edge or avante-garde theatre today, I can't help but think that what we used to create would never even make it on stage now! It seems that people have lost the ability to laugh at themselves; everything feels so serious and earnest these days. And weirdly competitive instead of collaborative. I am happy to leave the navigating of this restrained new age to the young artists!
Not that my creative juices have dried up! I have been dramaturging for my longtime art husband Kelly Clipperton on his one-man show this spring. I am happy to see him continue creating live theatre, even if I am not doing so myself. And I do have a few ideas up my sleeve once I buy that property in wine country...which is in the works for the new year ahead. Having privacy and space to create is a very exciting prospect indeed.
One last thought: I have had the opportunity to discuss the state of the new world we're entering in 2025 with many people over the last six months. I am surprised by how much negativity has permeated people's psyches. Since I've been studying stock investing and learning about the companies that underpin capitalism in North America, I see significant opportunities for the future, for all of us. I know that there is some polarizing information to sift through...but I love listening to those who have lived through so many administrations and shifting political parties like Don Peebles discuss the future. He does not hand ring, he does not fear monger. Interview after interview (especially 49:24 Don's Advice For Black Entrepreneurs In 2025), he reiterates his mantra: "Every setback is an opportunity in disguise". I hope that more people take Mr. Peebles attitude about the horizon. I know that is my goal for 2025! Have a happy new year all! xoxoxo
